RESORT INFO

WHY FLAINE in grand massif?

  • Located at the heart of the vast Grand Massif ski area.
  • Doorstep skiing with excellent snow records.
  • Great car-free ski resort for families.
  • All amenities and services close by.
  • Close proximity to Geneva Airport.

Flaine is an architecturally modern and car free ski resort located at 1600m in the Haute-Savoie region, close to Mont-Blanc. This friendly doorstep skiing village is great for families, with all the shops, services and amenities grouped together just a stone’s throw from all accommodation. There is also a free resort shuttle bus service.

Flaine is the largest of the Grand Massif ski villages and is in continuous renewal and expansion. This lively resort already attracts lots of ski enthusiasts and has become even more sought after during recent years thanks to the construction of more high quality, modern and stylish residences such as Les Pleiades (2007), Les Terrasses d’Eos (2008), Le Refuge du Golf and Les Terrasses de Veret (2010), Le Centaure (2012) and finally the exciting forthcoming arrivals of Les Terrasses d’Helios and Le Panoramic for the 2014/2015 winter ski season.

Flaine ski resort is part of one of the largest skiing areas in France: the Grand Massif. With one of the best snow records in the French Alps, Flaine is very often called the ‘Big Snowy Bowl’. Because of this, skiers and snowboarders will enjoy excellent ski conditions all winter, along with stunning scenery.

Conveniently close to Geneva airport (1 hour 15 minutes by car) and with snow on the doorstep of most accommodation, Flaine is also described as a ‘Fly-in, Ski-out resort’. Flaine is one of the most easily accessible resorts in the French Alps.

A bit of history…did you know?
Flaine was first discovered by a French geophysicist called Eric Boissonnas and a Swiss architect called Gérard Chervaz back in 1959. They entrusted Flaine’s design to architect Marcel Breuer, who also designed well-known buildings around the world such as the Whitney Museum and the Flushing Meadow Sports Park in New York, the Palais de l’Unesco in Paris and the Bijenkorf in Rotterdam as well as furniture like the Wassily chair.

The environment and natural surroundings were always very much in their minds during the planning stages and they wanted their ski resort to naturally blend and integrate into the surrounding mountains as much as possible, whilst still allowing for a good balance of functionality and innovative techniques. The sophisticated tunnel network means that not a single electric cable is visible from the exterior; a non-polluting gas heating plant was the first in the mountains; both maintaining the unspoilt look between all of the different levels of the resort.

The ski runs were designed by champion Emile Allais and Breuer went onto to complement them by creating cable car and gondola lift stations on the same level as the ski runs and by installing the first artificial snow making facilities in Europe (in 1973). Flaine also offers a wealth of history with works of art by Picasso, Dubuffet and Vasarely proudly standing alongside several listed buildings.

Flaine offers modern ski accommodation ranging from 3 Star Superior and 4 Star to 4 Star Luxury self-catering ski apartments and chalets. All of which offer ski-in/ski-out or doorstep skiing access and most of which have the added benefit of facilities such as a swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam and fitness rooms. Some also offer spa treatments and massages.

SKI INFO

The Grand Massif ski area is the fourth largest ski domain in France and offers 265km of linked and carefully maintained slopes which are suitable for all abilities and levels, especially beginners and intermediates.

Grand Massif links Flaine with the resorts of Les Carroz, Morillon, Samöens and Sixt Fer-à-Cheval and is popular with British skiers with good reason.

At an altitude of 2500m and facing Mont Blanc, the Grand Massif ski area is lucky to be blessed with one of the best snow records in the whole of the French Alps.

Flaine is located in the heart of the Grand Massif ski area.

New for Winter 2014/15

A new fun zone for kids is planned for Flaine Foret. A 5 star ski in/ski out Pierre & Vacances Premium residence will open at Montsoleil. Ski Total is opening the resorts first catered chalets.

This further develops the resort which, last year, saw the installation of a Fast Quad to replace the Diamant Noir double lift. The beginner area at Flaine Foret was also revamped in 2013/14.

The Skiing

Flaine Beginners/Low Level
Flaine is great for beginner and low level skiers and snowboarders. Good nursery slopes are located in as well as outside the village of Flaine, making this an ideal ski resort for beginners and families with young children.

4 lifts are completely free to use: the Le Pré chairlift, the Bissac magic carpet and the Forum bucket lift. Once you feel a little more confident you can access a few extra lifts at a special price before taking the full area ski pass.

The small Le Pré chairlift serves the nursery slopes in the Flaine Forum area and is quite low off the ground making it excellent for beginners. To the left of this lift is a lovely short green run.

There is an excellent range of blue slopes. Serpentine, Cristal and Olivine are wide and gentle and great for progressing beginners to start practising their carving turns.

Flaine Intermediates
Flaine is very good for intermediates, the majority of the slopes being blue and red.
The challenging Faust red slope runs from the top station all the way back down into the resort, with a few short and fairly steep sections that are sure to get the adrenalin going!

Good blues include Tourmaline and Mephisto (blue verging on red)

Flaine Experts
Runs not be missed include the Fred red run and the Styx and Le Diamant Noir blacks.
By taking the Aup de Véran gondola you will find the steep terrain below the Tête des Lindars at 2561m and from here you can cross Le Diamant Noir and take the long Almandine red which will take you back towards the village. Another great red from this sector is the Célestine run which takes you on a lovely winding, twisting and turning run through the forest and will bring you back right beside the village.

Flaine Off-Piste
Flaine offers some good non-groomed ski runs that are guaranteed to get your adrenalin pumping.

The new ‘Ze Forest’ fun space under the “Devils” slopes has banks, slaloms and a unique trail through the forest trees. Access is gained via the Aup de Véran gondola, the Diablotin red slopes then the Diable.

The Grand Massif ski area overall is a huge playground for freeriders and off-piste thrill seekers. As always, for your complete safety and to get the very best out of the whole ski area we would strongly recommend always hiring a mountain guide when partaking in off-piste skiing.

Flaine Snowboarders
Snowboarders will enjoy the Grand Massif thanks to the variety and good snow record of the skiing domain.

Throughout the Grand Massif, 3 snow parks are at the disposal of all snowboarders:

- Jampark Pro: This terrain is located in Flaine and is aimed at experts. It features rails, tables, quarter pipe, a boardercross course and plenty of kickers.

- Jampark Cool: This terrain is designed for less accomplished acrobats and is located In Samoëns.

- Jampark Kids: This terrain is located in Morillon and dedicated to children.

For freestylers and freeriders the new ‘Ze Forest’ fun space in Flaine under the Devils slopes has banks, slaloms and a unique trail through the forest. Access is gained via the Aup de Véran gondola, the Diablotin red slopes and then the Diable.

Flaine Cross-Country
Flaine’s Ski Nordic is situated at 1844m at ‘Le Col de Pierre Carrée’. This cross-country skiing area is one of the highest in Europe, with the best snow cover in the French Alps. You can enjoy 5kms of marked tracks for skating and traditional cross-country skiing. The ‘Agy’ area, about 30 minutes from Flaine offers 30km of additional tracks.

Pedestrians and snowshoe walkers can also enjoy 5km of marked footpaths

The free shuttle bus provides easy access to the area and tickets are on sale locally.

Flaine Pedestrians
Even if you don’t ski or snowboard, you can still enjoy magnificent views of Mont Blanc from Flaine ski resort. The ‘Grandes Platières’ cable car will take you from 1600m to 2500m in only 12 minutes! So why not enjoy lunch or a few leisurely drinks on the sun terrace of the altitude bar and restaurant, located at the top.

Flaine is ideal for beginners, families with young children and intermediates. There are plenty of wide and open snowy boulevards, moguls and sunny cruising motorways - offering excellent skiing and snowboarding for all. The tree-lined pistes of Flaine are also perfect on bad weather days, offering shelter and much better visibility when the snow really starts to fall.

Did you know?
Interestingly enough, each different grade of run in the Flaine ski area has a theme in its name: the greens are named after types of trees (Pin, Epicea, Meleze…); the blues after jewels and metals (Cristal, Tourmaline, Turquoise, Serpentine…); the reds after diabolical themes (Mephisto, Faust, Lucifer, Belzebuth…) and the blacks after stars (Agate, Diamant Noir, Styx…).

From Flaine, you can access the highest point of the Grand Massif ski area by gondola, which takes you to Les Grandes Platieres at 2480m. From this point, you will be able to enjoy a wide series of runs from blue to black all going back down to Flaine. The most famous run from this point has to be the Cascades blue slope which is an impressive 14km long! This run will take you on an altitude drop of 1800m right down to the village of Sixt Fer-à-Cheval, with glorious scenery in the Ger Valley - not one single ski lift all the way down and the reward of seeing the frozen waterfalls at the bottom! At a relaxed pace, you should allow approximately 4 hours for the round trip. From Sixt the free shuttle bus will take you back to the main cable car in Samoens or Morillon – be sure to check the bus and lift closing times before you head off as we don’t want any stranded skiers!

Access to the Grand Massif ski area from Flaine is very easy via the recently built 8-seater Grands Vans lift. This is a high speed lift and so queues are very short. The blue Dolomie run will then start you off on your journey into Samöens, Morillon and Les Carroz.

We cannot always guarantee that prices will be cheaper than in resort but you can be assured that if the pound depreciates, you will not be charged more for your equipment, enabling you to budget for your holiday at the time of booking.

Please note that we do not offer the basic ‘Green’ category as we feel these are generally inadequate skis even for beginners

Ski Passes

You have the choice to purchase a lift pass which covers the whole ski area or the smaller local ski area. We suggest that you purchase the larger area lift pass, unless a complete beginner.

Lift pass delivered FREE to your home
Book your lift pass for Flaine at least 14 days prior departure and we can arrange hands-free lift passes delivered to your home, meaning you can ski straight through the gates, giving you more piste time - at no extra cost! Please note you will not be required to hand over a voucher at the kiosk in resort (non applicable for free passes as you will be asked for a photo and a proof of age on site).
Conditions apply. Please enquire with a member of the Ski Collection team for more details.

(*): For clients staying in Flaine Foret, MontSoleil or Le Hameau, a shuttle bus is organized to transport children between the residence & the Rabbit Club (Flaine Front de Neige), each morning & evening.

(1): Rabbit Club is a mix of day care with activities/games & 2 hour group ski lessons per each half day attended. During the February school holidays (08/02/15 - 07/03/15) only full days are possible (with or without lunch included). A minimum of 5 children of the same level is required for lessons to go ahead.

(2): 1 x 2 hr 45 mins lesson per day alternating between Mornings 09.00 - 11.45 & Afternoons 14.15 - 17.00 (you can choose Morning or Afternoon for the 1st day).

Important Note: For peak periods (Xmas, NY, Feb half term & Easter), we strongly recommend that you book as early as possible and in any case at least 6 weeks prior to the required dates. Morning lessons tend to get booked up first and therefore we may only be able to offer afternoon classes within 6 weeks of departure. In some resorts, English speaking instructors may not always be available, particularly at peak times. Please note that lesson times are subject to change right up until the last minute. Outside French school holidays, the Ski School reserves the right to cancel group lessons should numbers be insufficient. If numbers are low, children may join adult ski school groups. Cancellation or modification of your lessons between 16 and 0 days before departure will incur a cancellation charge of 100%.

Our prices are calculated at the exchange rate that applies when our currency is bought. We cannot always guarantee that prices will be cheaper than in resort but you can be assured that if the pound depreciates, you will not be charged more for your equipment, enabling you to budget for your holiday at the time of booking.

The Piou-Piou Club has a great Snow Garden which is a dedicated learning area for child beginners aged 3-11 years old to learn how to ski and snowboard in complete safety whilst having fun. The slope is closed to the public and is equipped with fun inflatable animals, bumps, slaloms and a small tow lift. There are two meeting points: Flaine Front de Neige and Flaine Foret.

The Rabbit Club is for children aged 3-11 years from beginner to 1st Star level and will look after your children for half days or full days, with or without lunch. At the end of the week they take part in a skiing test where medals are awarded. Once the lessons are finished children have the opportunity to play with their newly found friends in the Club house and take part in a variety of fun activities. The Rabbit Club is located in Flaine Front de Neige. If you are staying in Flaine Foret or Le Hameau de Flaine, you can request to use the ESF shuttle.

Competition Training for teenagers is for good skiers who wish to improve their ski racing in slalom, giant slalom, improve speed, off-piste and general skiing ability and confidence. Minimum level: Bronze Fleche.

Ski Group Lessons for children aged 5-11 years, teenagers from the age of 12 years and adults are available from Beginner Level to Elite Class. As always the theory is to learn whilst having fun and making new friends.

Snowboard Group Lessons for children are possible from the age of 8 years and above, teenagers and adults from Beginner to Snow Expert. Discover snowboarding in a relaxed environment, discover how to do tricks on the flat and enjoy the snowpark.

Private Lessons are possible for children from 2.5 years old, teenagers and adults in skiing, snowboarding, cross-country, freestyle and telemark. If you don’t fancy group lessons and would prefer a more one-to-one personal approach then private lessons are great, either on your own or in a small group of just your family or friends. Progress is often quicker and individual goals met at a faster pace. Learn a new technique, improve your skills or simply to discover the very best that the Grand Massif ski area has to offer. Possible for full days, half days, 2 hours, 1 & ½ hours and 1 hour.

Off-piste Skiing is possible from 16 years of age, minimum level is Level 3. To safely experience the very best that the Grand Massif ski area has to offer, we would always highly recommend a ski instructor or mountain guide for off-piste skiing. Discover the best powder skiing far from the marked runs on fresh snow and through the forests. Half days or full days possible.

Snowshoe Walks through the forest are great fun for all the family. No minimum level required. Get back to nature, discovering the pure beauty of the mountain scenery and its animal residents, all close up.
