Megève

Resort description

Megeve was conceived in the 1920s as a French alternative to Saint-Moritz, it was the first purpose-built resort in the Alps. Megeve is an enchanting town set in a lovely sunny setting, which has retained its heritage and old rustic charm to become one of the most fashionable resorts in France. Megeve is one of the best resorts in the Alps for non-skiers: Megeve has a beautifully preserved medieval centre - now pedestrianised - with narrow cobbled streets, tastefully restored buildings, a pretty church, horse-drawn sleighs, a weekly market, an open-ice rink and plenty of marked paths for walkers. There are lots of smart clothing, jewellery, food, antique and gift shops.

Megeve

Megeve has superb mountain views, regarded as the best in the Alps

In the town centre at night the buildings are floodlit and the trees filled with sparkling lights

Megève has some of the most sophisticated lift systems in the Alps so it benefits from few or no queues at the lifts

Skiing in Megeve

Megeve is made up of 3 mountains (1) Mont d’Arbois accessible from Megeve and gondola from La Princesse (north-east of town). (2) Rochebrune accessed by a gondola from Megeve centre. (3) Le Jaillet accessed by gondola just outside the north-west edge of town

Mont d’Arbois is the biggest and highest mountain out of the three. It has some lovely wooded slopes as well as a vast open ski area

Mont Joly ski area has the highest slopes in Megeve

For experts off piste is the main attraction

Megeve does not attract a lot of off piste skiers so the off piste areas are far less skied than in other Mont Blanc areas.

Megeve is ideal for intermediates with extensive slopes and ideal for cruising

The ski area is large with smooth well groomed pistes it has an abundance of green slopes and gentle blue slopes which makes it good for beginners

Snowboarding in Megeve

Megeve is a good place to try boarding for the first time with plenty of fairly wide, gently runs and a lot of ski lifts and gondolas

There is the Mont Joux terrain park which has a 320m slope, a half pipe, quarter pipe and a selection of challenging moguls

Cross country skiing

There are 75km/ 47 miles of varied trails throughout the area

There are 2 parallel trails which will take you all the way along the resorts 68km of marked pistes

Ski Schools

ESF in Megeve has 5 teaching centres and with over 50 years of teaching experience so you will be in safe hands

They offer alpine skiing and cross country skiing lessons varying from 5 to 6 days of lessons.

The children are well catered for to with the Piou Piou club looking after children from 3- 5 years old which teaches the children to ski in the snow garden

Skiing lessons are also available for the children aged 5- 12 years old.

The Skiing
Megeve has a large linked ski area with perfect slopes for the intermediate cruising. It is also a great area for beginners with the nursery slopes at Mont d'Arbois which are easily accessible by cable-car or ski-bus. For expert skiers Megeve is ideal based to explore the 13 resorts covered by the Mont Blanc ski pass. The highest point is Côte 2000, which provides tougher skiing and the best snow. The off-piste here is far less skied than in most of the Mont-Blanc resorts. Two of the three areas of Megeve are linked at their base by a cable car (Mont d'Arbois and Rochebrune). Rochebrune offers arguable some of the most attractive runs in the delightful tree lined area. Whilst Mont d'Arbois area is linked to Saint Gervais.

Ski Pass Mont Blanc opens up to 700 km of pistes covering a dozen local resorts including Chamonix. Please note driving with your own car is required for interconnecting resorts.
Après Ski
Megeve is a very lively resort with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. There are 90 bars and restaurants, many being smart. Its nightlife is sophisticated and revolves mainly around Megeve's piano bars and nightclubs. Megeve's restaurants include L'Alpage which offers Savoyard specialities and the Italian Mirtillo. Club de Jazz Les Cinq offers live music and jazz.
