Megève

Resort description

Megeve was conceived in the 1920s as a French alternative to Saint-Moritz, it was the first purpose-built resort in the Alps. Megeve is an enchanting town set in a lovely sunny setting, which has retained its heritage and old rustic charm to become one of the most fashionable resorts in France. Megeve is one of the best resorts in the Alps for non-skiers: Megeve has a beautifully preserved medieval centre - now pedestrianised - with narrow cobbled streets, tastefully restored buildings, a pretty church, horse-drawn sleighs, a weekly market, an open-ice rink and plenty of marked paths for walkers. There are lots of smart clothing, jewellery, food, antique and gift shops.

Megeve

Megève has superb mountain views, regarded as the best in the Alps.

In the town centre at night the buildings are floodlit and the trees filled with sparkling lights.

Megève has some of the most sophisticated lift systems in the Alps so it benefits from few or no queues at the lifts.

Skiing in Megeve

Megève is made up of 3 mountains (1) Mont d’Arbois accessible from Megeve and gondola from La Princesse (north-east of town). (2) Rochebrune accessed by a gondola from Megeve centre. (3) Le Jaillet accessed by gondola just outside the north-west edge of town.

Mont d’Arbois is the biggest and highest mountain out of the three. It has some lovely wooded slopes as well as a vast open ski area.

Mont Joly ski area has the highest slopes in Megève.

For experts off piste is the main attraction.

Megève does not attract a lot of off-piste skiers so the off piste areas are far less skied than in other Mont Blanc areas.

Megève is ideal for intermediates with extensive slopes and ideal for cruising.

The ski area is large with smooth well groomed pistes it has an abundance of green slopes and gentle blue slopes which makes it good for beginners.

Magnestick is a new safety device for children, which can now be found on 2 chairlifts within Megève : Petit Rochebrune (4 seater, 2 seats Magnesticked) and Grands Champs (4 seater, 2 seats Magnesticked).

This is a simple yet very effective device: A permanent magnet is fixed to the seat of the chairlift and is activated for the whole ride up including when the child gets on.

A light (200g) back protector worn by the child includes a metallic plate. Children wear this protection throughout the day's skiing (not only when taking the chairlift). This vest comes in a bright colour so that children can be seen on the slopes and to avoid collisions with other slope users. On their way down, this CE-approved back protector protects their backs if they fall or collide with someone else.

On arrival at the top, the magnet is automatically deactivated when the child gets off. The child can then get up from the seat normally.

The risk of a child falling off before getting to the top is prevented as the magnet is only deactivated when the child puts their skis on the snow (even if someone lifts the restraining bar well before arrival).

As soon as the metallic plate in the back protector comes into contact with the magnet on the chairlift, the child is ‘attached’ to the seat. The aim is to protect children at each stage of the chairlift transport process!

STAGE 1 - Getting on: As soon as the child is sat with their back against the back of the seat, the system prevents any risk of sliding off even if the person accompanying does not immediately lower the restraining bar.

STAGE 2 - The ride up: The child can still move about freely but is ‘attached’ to the seat during the whole ride up. The system avoids any risk of sliding under the restraining bar.

STAGE 3 - Getting off: Even if the restraining bar is lifted before arrival, the child remains safely ‘attached to the seat' until their skis touch the snow.
