  • Travel to the French Alps - Eurostar Train

Train Services to the French Alps

caption

For those of you who prefer to leave your car at home, train is a good alternative. It's worth bearing in mind that if you take the evening train both ways then you may benefit from up to 8 days of skiing instead of the usual 6.

We can arrange two train options - direct Ski Train or Eurostar Beyond (with a change at Paris). Private taxi transfers from the stations to resorts can also be pre-booked with us.

Ski Train (Eurostar)

The snow train will run from 22 December 2017 to 7 April 2018. Travel from London St Pancras or Ashford International direct to Moutiers or Bourg St Maurice. You can either travel on Friday night or Saturday morning (arriving in time for an evening meal). Return Saturday morning or night. Please note these are NOT sleeper trains.

Ski Train Tip:

If you travel on the direct night train to the French Alps both ways, you'll get two extra days on your skis. You'll arrive on Saturday morning and leave on Saturday evening, beating the flying crowd and having the slopes all to yourself on change over day.

Bourg St Maurice serves the Paradiski ski area (Les Arcs, La Plagne, Peisey-Vallandry), the Espace Killy ski area (Tignes, Val d'Isère), La Rosière and Sainte Foy ski areas

Moutiers is suited to the 3 Valleys ski area (Val Thorens, Les Menuires, Meribel, Courchevel)

Why take the ski train vs flying?

Many people assume flying down to the Alps is the easiest and quickest option but actually taking the train can sometimes take less time and has far more perks. Although it might not suit everyone, its definitely worth a read of what it can offer for your party - you may be surprised...!

1. Excellent value compared to flying on peak dates

Eurostar ticket prices are generally cheaper on Peak dates than flying. When checked against a major airline for the same date and similar times it was almost twice the price for adults and almost three times the price for children.

2. Free ski carriage

Pay absolutely nothing for your ski carriage while on board Eurostar. Airlines can charge in excess of £70 per item. On Eurostar you can take up to 2 bags 85cm long each, 1 piece of hand luggage and 1 pair of skis and snowboard per person. There is no weight restriction on luggage either (or restrictions on liquids, apart from alcohol), so you don't have to worry about sticking to your 20kg; just keep an eye on the size of bag (as above).

3. Enjoy the stunning French scenery

It's not exactly the most interesting thing looking out of an airplane window, especially if its cloudy! You might see the odd mountain if your lucky and sat in a window seat but otherwise its all rather dull! On the train you can view all the scenery around you wherever you are sat on the train. You can even have a game of eye spy with the kids!

4. Its quicker than flying

Ok so maybe not every route is quicker, but alot are depending on where you stay. By the time you get to the airport, check in, queue for security, wait in departures, take the flight, go back through security the other side, collect your luggage, get your transfer...you could just be relaxing on the train! It's worn me out just writing it! With the train you can miss out a few of these laborious tasks and be on your way without the stress.

5. Great for kids

Taking the train is definitely more free roaming for kids. They can easily move around the train without having to worry about getting in a trolley dolly's way or anyone else's way while they queue down the aisle for the toilets, there is plenty of space and leg room (including for adults), wider aisles and no seat belt restriction. On some of the newer trains, there is also on board WiFi - that will keep the whole family happy.

6. Onboard cafes

There are cafes on board serving hot and cold drink, snacks, hot meals...and you can access this yourself without having to wait for someone to come serve you. You can send the kids off too for 5 mins break!

Eurostar Beyond

This enables you to leave London on either the Friday evening or the Saturday morning with Eurostar direct trains from London St Pancreas (or Ashford International) to Paris and then take a connecting train. London St Pancras International to Paris Gare du Nord: 2 hours 15 minutes.

We will advise you at time of booking of the best timetables, leaving plenty of time to change stations in Paris, as Eurostar arrives at Gare du Nord and the TGV/Express trains leave from Gare de Lyon. You have to make your own way between the two. Allow 70-90 mins for transferring by underground to Gare de Lyon).

Please note that TGV French sections of the itineraries via Paris can only be booked 3 months ahead of actual travel dates.
